❧ please note that I am extremely backtag friendly and will be backtagging these threads until the cows come home. and I'm always really eager to do things even if this post is found months after it's posted. also lol sometimes i may take a bit to get to them since some characters are harder for me to think up things and require some canon review! sorry for the wait, i'll make you a vegemite sandwich in the interim.

[ caroline smiles. stiles antics are always a breath of fresh air … even when, ironically, she doesn't really need air. stiles takes the whole vampire news well, treats her like she isn't different at all; she's caroline, someone who has been shoved into his life halfway through it shaping him to be this really cool person, and he just takes it in stride, everything, from the shit hitting the fan to her fights with her mother to pulling him out of the house whenever she needs some time alone but not really time alone. it's weird and disconcerting and sometimes she feels belatedly concerned over him. i'm a vampire. oh, that's cool. where's the disowning? the fear of being around her when he's cut himself — and, lets face it, stiles is always falling over and scraping his knees. ]

I can't just want to spend time with you? You're the only person who listens to me when I talk about nothing.

[ he's partially right — she's asked him on this roadtrip because of mom. mom wanted her to take stiles away, give him a bit of a breather, give herself a bit of one, too, even if she never really said those words. her mom's started to become in tune with the shit that caroline's dealing with; tyler's gone, elena's a vampire, bonnie's somewhere, jeremy's back, she's being stalked by an obsessive a thousand year old vampire — things are just so not like how caroline had planned them to be when she mapped out her entire life. the one good thing, though, that has come true from that plan is a constant. while stiles speaks of constants, he is her constant. it used to be elena and bonnie, then stefan, partially, then tyler. but since tyler's nowhere to be found and stefan's gelling his air even higher than before and elena's dealing with stupid boy drama like she always is, stiles is the only person who really takes the time out of his day to ask her what's up. ]

[ caroline is good about not talking about what needs to be spoken about. watch her do it now. everyone else lets her get away with it — mostly because none of them really cared. ]

[ stiles takes like a fish to water in all of this supernatural stuff, which had thrown scott for a loop too considering how difficult it was adjusting. sometimes he envies them their new take on life but on the outside looking in occasionally it might be a little too much for any one person to handle. which is why ( barring a search for a werewolf cure with scott that he will never bring up again ) he tries not to give them too hard of a time about something that stiles generally considers intrinsically cool.

it hadn't changed her. she was still caroline, scott was still scott, tyler was still a douchebag—aside from the occasional amplification of emotions they were all still more or less the people stiles knew before. ]

Yeah but you've been literally talking about nothing since you got back. I didn't think it was humanly possible for you to be silent that long. [ a beat. ] Don't even bother pointing out how hypocritical I sound.

[ he pushes off the rock, feet sliding a bit before he gains his balance on the smoother stones. he's been debating about half the time she's been in the water whether or not it's worth going in, getting soaked and then getting back into the jeep for the rest of the drive because he'd be way too lazy to change. but he edges up a little closer to the water, watching out where she's staring up at the sky. ]

Please tell me it's not that dude with the weird accent.

[ — and, with her mouth open, she's just about to form the words of pointing out said hypocritical sound. ]

Klaus? [ caroline wants to dip her head under the water and never come up for air ever again. the topic of klaus is one caroline never wants to breach. it's complicated and complex and she doesn't understand how to make it go away. she wants tyler as a whole. she wants everything to go back the way it was. but klaus continues to break everything and everyone as if they're toys. she walks on eggshells; caroline's never been good at that. she barrels straight into everything with insensitivity and ignorance. but this? ]

[ she really wants to duck her head under water. ]

[ and she's so sick of needing to grovel for a cure to a werewolf bite. she doesn't want to bring that up with stiles, though. not now, anyway. or ever. ] No. It's not — Nothing is happening with him. Ever. And I wish he'd get the idea just like I wish everyone would just forget any of that was ever a thing that could happen or would happen or did happen.

[ is she still talking about nothing? is she still silent? caroline doesn't like to talk about this. klaus had introduced an idea to her that she was capable of much more than living out the rest of eternity in mystic falls. but he hadn't been quite so successful in planting the idea of doing so with him. ]

[ even though he's very insistent on it. and then lashes out when she refuses to adapt to his ideas by a bite to the neck here or a threat of hunting her boyfriend for the rest of his eternal life there. ]

[ she's with stiles, outside of the town, after all. ]
