(2013) open rp post

permanent open rp post

new year, new post.
❧ select one of my characters (or one that you know I play but isn't on the list)
❧ leave a prompt: pictures work best; lyrics, scenarios of your own creation, etc.
❧ reply as many times as you want.
❧ the apocalypse finally happens.

please note that I am extremely backtag friendly and will be backtagging these threads until the cows come home. and I'm always really eager to do things even if this post is found months after it's posted. also lol sometimes i may take a bit to get to them since some characters are harder for me to think up things and require some canon review! sorry for the wait, i'll make you a vegemite sandwich in the interim.

[ new orleans is the last place katherine wishes to be. she understands that it's suicide to be in klaus' territory, but katherine's on a suicidal mission, anyway. she has become blind and deaf since having the cure shoved down her throat, doesn't feel like herself even in her own skin. her hair feels matted, her fingers feel thick with the blood of the people she's killed, and she feels something sitting heavily on her chest that has been there before, but she's managed to push it down with strength unnatural to a human. ]

[ she seeks him out because she has no one else. katherine pierce, all alone in the world, exactly as she had started. ]

[ what she had thought would happened has happened — henchmen for klaus have her cornered in an alleyway, after having purposefully driven her into it, and her worst nightmare of becoming a pawn once again is being relived. it's rather poetic — more-so for him than for her — that he finds her in an alley. with his hands covered in blood, much similar to how she imagines hers to be, if the blood hadn't been washed away over the centuries, with hearts in his hands and his suit as immaculate as ever. ]

[ this chess board may have klaus as the king, but perhaps elijah is a rogue knight in white. ]

Elijah. [ and she hates how weak her voice sounds, of how she is breathless when she would be collected and turned to stone in his presence. ]

[ there are things in elijah's very long life that he will never forget — katerina's heartbeat, among them. katerina because the rhythm doesn't belong to katherine, it never has. new orleans is thick with the tick of pulses, low lights humming, and street musicians. one heartbeat out of many shouldn't strike such a chord, but it does, if only because it's accompanied by the deafening silence of those his brother deems tools.

elijah's hardly ever held any liking for tools, as it is; it's an acquired taste, he's been told.

which is why his hands are slick with blood and the cuffs of his sleeves are stained with the act. the suit isn't salvageable, he knows, if only from centuries of experience. it's easily replaced, anyway. what isn't, however, is the woman left standing in the alleyway when he lets the organs fall from his hold and gives a single shake of his hands.

katherine owns that beat, now. but the tone of her voice hooks him, worry crossing his expression before he thins his lips, brow creased.
]

Katerina. You shouldn't be here. [ it's like reading her last rites, but elijah has no intention of informing his brother of her presence in the city and he's taken care of those who would. for now, it's thinly veiled concern. ] Haven't you gotten what you wanted?

[ tell me otherwise, prove me wrong. ]

[ katerina, never katherine. before, katherine had wondered if elijah had called her by her birth name to rile her, to remind her of what she had lost. as she had thwarted him, and his brother, she had always believed he did so out of spite. but, perhaps, as she sees now, they're both running with a ghost — she away from it and him to it. ]

[ but where katherine had once held dominance, it is now she who struggles to maintain control. katerina is in every movement and breath she makes — the vulnerable, the completely penetrable. her heart stammers in a way she has never allowed it to before. and it does so now, in this moment; she dislikes that it has now become a tic that can give her away. ]

[ katherine hardens. the moment he asks it, she turns to stone, that humanity that seeps through every now and then — and even moreso that she is completely that humanity — disappears for only a mere few moments. she feels like herself again, all hard rock and impenetrable. except, how impenetrable is she, really? ]

I didn't take the cure willingly, Elijah. [ klaus had forced her hand, as he had always forced it. she had run and turned her life inside out to escape a monster — and she had snapped jeremy's life in half without a second thought to defeat said monster. katherine does not do things willingly because she does them as a necessity. ]

[ it's clear she has not answered his question — or perhaps this was his question all along; niklaus had always come between them, and did she not receive her wish? him gone? katherine pierce always gets what she wants, but katerina never does. and does she want this? humanity? to be completely weak and alone? she had done so many things to avoid it, weaved so many webs that now she is caught in the very core of it. she takes a step forward, but no more than one. ] You and I both know that.

[ elena, elena it remains unspoken, but it lingers in the air just like the ghosts of lord elijah and katerina always did between them. ]

[ ghosts are heady things between them, weighing and pressuring, threatening to snap in the blink of an eye. katerina is the only ghost elijah has ever attempted to hold onto — forever out of his reach, even in the taste of her kiss and now the newly kickstarted beat of her heart. it's feels like old hat, like a play he knows all of his lines in; he arrives, falls for her bedroom lies, and drinks in that ghost until he realizes it was always katherine and never katerina.

the uneven beat of her heart has him distracted, the gore webbing his fingers lost in the cadence of it. it shows, too, in the crease of his brows and the way he opens his mouth only to promptly shut once again. there's gravity between them now, more than ghosts could ever lend to and it almost feels like a flash of a different time — a time when klaus was a name otherwise unknown to her and the only game around them was one of noble politics.
]

Willingly, [ he parrots as though the word is foreign, but the embittered twitch of his lips speaks volumes. katherine is a creature of necessity — he knows this as he knows her heartbeat, as he knows katerina, but necessity isn't something elijah dreams of, though he operates in kind.

( dreams, after all, are something afforded to children. )
]

What else should I know, then? Should I know why you're in a city inhabited by the very man you've been running from for centuries? [ years ago, he might have chosen to believe it was for himself, but those hopes are tainted between them — no matter how much he yearns for them still. at the very least, he doesn't step away to put more distance between them when she takes that single step. ]
